"Beginner" Chameleons
Essentially there are really only two chameleons to be considered beginners. Furcifer Pardalis (Panther chameleons) and
Chamaeleo Calyptratus (Veiled chameleons). Fortunately, they are readily available, large, hardy, and gorgeous! Of the two,
Panthers generally have the more vibrant colours but with a price. The main difference between the two (aside from
requirements) is the price tag. In Canada an average price for a Panther in a pet shop is $250, $150 at a reptile expo. US
prices are around $250 low end. Veiled chameleons in Canada can be as low as $35. US veiled chameleons
are generally around the same price and are steadily becoming cheaper.
The major drawback of veiled chameleons is their reputation of being aggressive and nasty towards their own keeper. You
may easily find yourself with a very aggressive Panther chameleon or a very docile veiled chameleon; but generally
speaking the majority of veiled chameleons are territorial and intolerable of intruders. Panthers require a little more humidity
and lower temperatures than veiled chameleons, but they both make great starter chameleons. Please don’t
let the price of C. calyptratus fool you, they are still amazing animals with high requirements and deserve the same care
as would a pricey Panther chameleon.
Both these species are fairly hardy and generally easy to breed. But be sure you get your animal from a known breeder
to ensure top quality and great colours!
I wish you all the luck with your new or existing chameleon(s) and check back anytime! Feel free to post in my forum
